Paperwhites

paperwhites.jpg

Indoor Paperwhites will grow and bloom happily in nothing more than water and stones. Paperwhite bulbs produce clusters of fragrant white flowers. Bulbs generally bloom 4-6 weeks after potting.

Planting
Place a layer of pebbles or stones along the bottom of a vase,  2 -4 inches deep depending on the size of your vase. When that is complete,  place the bulbs close together, roots face down.  Surround the bulbs with additional stones or pebbles to support them in the vase. Make sure to leave the tops of the bulbs exposed. In conclusion, add water until the level reaches just below the base of the bulbs (the bulbs will rot if the water level is too high).

Rooting and Aftercare
Set the vase out of direct sunlight in a room set at a temperature of 55-65 degrees F.  Paperwhites need wet roots, make sure to check the bulbs regularly for water. Weekly, gently tug on the bulbs to see if they have begun to take root. If you are met with resistance move the bulbs to a sunny location. Make sure to keep an eye on the water level. Bulbs can dry out quickly when in active growth. Bulbs should bloom within 4-6 weeks after planting.

Blooms of a Paperwhite can get very top heavy and slump. Blooms can be held upright with twine or bamboo stakes.  Indoor Narcissus can be planted from October till March.  If planted at intervals from three to four weeks, one can enjoy a subsequent flowering of these easy to grow bulbs over a period of several weeks. Once a Paperwhite has finished blooming, it will not bloom indoors again. They can be thrown out or tossed into a compost pile.
