Preen Vegetable Garden Weed Preventer contains corn gluten meal. It is an organic by-product of the wet-milling process, and is sold as a feed ingredient for cattle, poultry and other species of livestock. It has been used in fish food for commercial fish production. Corn gluten meal is also a primary component in some dog food products. Corn gluten meal is 60% corn protein, and it is this high level of protein that inhibits the growth of seeds.

Preen Vegetable Garden Weed Preventer is an organic product that is safe for use around children and pets. As with any product, allergic reactions can occur in some individuals. The product prevents annual weeds from growing in vegetable gardens, flowerbeds, around trees, shrubs, and ground covers for up to 4 to 6 weeks.

Preen Vegetable Garden Weed Preventer inhibits weeds from germinating from seed.  It will not control plants that are spreading from living plant parts such as runners and rhizomes.

  • If you have weeds in your garden, remove the weeds by pulling or hoeing them, or use an all-purpose weed killer of your choice (read and follow manufacturer’s label directions).

  • Sprinkle Preen Vegetable Garden Weed Preventer evenly over the soil surface at a rate of 5 lbs. per 250 sq. ft. If you choose, you can use twice the recommended rate for even better control with no fear of burning your plants.

  • Rake lightly into the soil.

  • Immediately water the top 1 to 2 inches of soil to activate the product. Afterwards do not water for 2 to 3 days. If excessive rain occurs, reapplication may be necessary.

  • Preen Vegetable Garden Weed Preventer can be applied with confidence around established vegetables, herbs, flowers, trees, shrubs, ground covers, and fruit.

  • Do not apply Preen Vegetable Garden Weed Preventer on newly seeded areas. When your seedlings have true leaves and are 2 to 3 inches tall, it is safe to apply.

  • Preen Vegetable Garden Weed Preventer can be applied even up to the day of harvest.
