Job Summary 

The Greenhouse Department Manager is responsible for the day-to-day direction of the Greenhouse Department at the Fleetwood retail location. This role oversees greenhouse operations, customer service, merchandising, plant care, inventory, labor, expenses, safety and team leadership to support a clean, attractive, profitable and customer-focused department. 

The ideal candidate has strong knowledge of annuals, seasonal flowers, houseplants and related greenhouse products, along with a hands-on leadership style and a desire to continually build product knowledge. This position requires a customer-first approach and the ability to lead employees in a fast-paced, seasonal retail environment. 

Key Responsibilities 

Department Management 

  • Manage daily operations within the Greenhouse Department, including staffing, merchandising, cleanliness, safety, customer service, plant care and sales performance. 
  • Take responsibility for general cleanup, maintenance and presentation of greenhouse areas, including display tables, walkways, selling areas and customer shopping spaces. 
  • Maintain a clean, neat, organized and safe greenhouse environment, carefully monitoring for hazards and ensuring employees follow safety rules and exercise caution in all activities. 
  • Manage department inventory, sales, labor and expenses to support a profitable department. 
  • Assist with unloading delivery trucks, restocking tables and organizing product flow throughout the department. 
  • Partner with store leadership, buyers, vendors and other departments to support store operations and customer service. 

Team Leadership 

  • Directly supervise Greenhouse Department associates. 
  • Train, manage, schedule, coach and support department employees to maintain strong service, productivity, accountability and plant-care standards. 
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with customers, employees, vendors and management. 
  • Attend employee meetings and training sessions and support ongoing department knowledge and skill development. 
  • Provide cross-coverage and support in other departments as needed. 

Plant Care, Merchandising and Product Knowledge 

  • Ensure plant material is maintained so it is healthy, attractive and ready for retail sale, including watering, cleaning, deadheading, pest scouting and general maintenance. 
  • Oversee and support the creation of attractive, creative and properly maintained selling displays throughout the greenhouse area. 
  • Monitor inventory levels and communicate reordering needs to buyers or store leadership to maintain appropriate product availability. 
  • Maintain knowledge of weekly sales items throughout the Greenhouse Department and keep cashiers and team members updated on in-store and advertise specials. 
  • Scout for pests and diseases on plant material and communicate concerns promptly so they can be addressed appropriately. 
  • Continually seek out knowledge of annuals, seasonal flowers, houseplants and related products to better serve customers and support the department. 

Customer Experience 

  • Provide polite, prompt, energetic, enthusiastic and courteous service to every customer. 
  • Approach customers with a smile and positive attitude, offer assistance as needed, answer questions politely and follow up when additional information is needed. 
  • Use strong product knowledge and communication skills to suggest helpful solutions, product tie-ins and add-on sales. 
  • Support Esbenshade's Customer Loyalty Card Program and help customers understand available benefits. 
  • Do everything possible to provide customers with a positive, successful shopping experience that encourages them to return. 

Skills and Qualifications 

  • Strong knowledge of annuals, seasonal flowers, houseplants and greenhouse retail products is preferred. 
  • Greenhouse, horticulture, garden center, or closely related retail experience is required; management experience is preferred. 
  • Ability to provide friendly, patient and helpful customer service while leading others to do the same. 
  • Tactful, cheerful, sincere, polite, honest, encouraging and accommodating approach with customers and team members. 
  • Ability to solve problems, make decisions and provide helpful suggestions to customers and employees. 
  • Ability to move and set up displays, maintain greenhouse areas, restock product and support hands-on department work. 
  • High level of initiative, strong work and personal ethics and a desire for excellence. 
  • Simple computer experience or willingness to learn retail and inventory systems. 
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred. 

Work Schedule and Physical Requirements 

  • Full-time schedule with availability Monday through Saturday; Esbenshade's is closed on Sundays, although some Sunday plant care may be required. 
  • Willingness to work evenings, typically one to three per week during the spring busy season or as business needs require. 
  • Most Saturdays are required, with additional Saturday availability expected during peak seasons. 
  • Some holidays and peak retail event weeks are required, including Easter weekend, Mother's Day weekend, Memorial Day, Black Friday and other high-volume periods as needed. 
  • Overtime may be required during the busy spring season and other peak periods. 
  • Ability to open and close the store when scheduled. 
  • Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds. 
  • Ability to stand and work on your feet for long periods of time, including 8- to 10-hour shifts and occasional longer shifts during peak seasons. 
  • Ability to work in greenhouse and retail conditions, including dust, heat, cold, rain, snow and high humidity. 
  • Ability to commute or relocate to Fleetwood, PA before starting work is required.
