Description
Toma Verde Tomatillo
Produces large, golf ball sized green fruit that are used in a wide variety of Mexican foods. This member of the nightshade family is grown similarly to tomato plants.
When and where to plant
Select a sunny, well drained location and sow seed after weather and soil are warm. For earlier crop start seeds indoors 5-7 weeks before planting outdoors. For best result, loosen soil with spaade or fork, fertilize with vegetable food and smooth with rake. Firm soil over seed and keep moist.
Care
Plants will sprawl over the ground unless staked or trellised. Water deeply when dry.
Harvesting
Pick when fruit is fully grown, after the husks turn dry and brown. Green fruits are tart; fully ripe yellow fruits are sweet. Leave husks on for storage, but remove before preparation and eating.
