Wave® Petunia Plant Pointers

 Wave® Petunia Plant Pointers

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about Wave® Petunias.

Can I plant Wave Petunias in the same garden bed

      every year?

It is not recommended that you plant your Wave Petunias in the same place every year. You'll see the best results if you move them around your garden – put them in a planter one year, in a small bed the next. For baskets and containers, dispose of the old soil and replace with new, fresh soil.

By rotating your Wave Petunias, you'll not only enjoy the best performing plants, but you'll be maintaining the health of your garden soil. Farmers have been practicing crop rotation with great success for years.

Do I need to "deadhead" or remove the old blooms

off of my Wave Petunia plants?

Wave Petunias are so low-maintenance that you don't have to cut the plants back or remove dead flowers. The faded blooms will dry up and drop off the plants on their own, with more appearing continuously all season long.

Where is the best place to plant Wave Petunias?

Choose a bright, sunny location with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. Sun is a MUST to keep your plants blooming and looking their best all season.

What is the best use for Wave Petunias?

Wave Petunias can be planted just about anywhere! They have outstanding garden performance, but they also work well in hanging baskets, large containers and window boxes.

Any advice for planting Wave Petunias in the

    garden?

A few things to remember...

·  Maintain the same plant depth as the original pot or pack

·    Space Wave Petunias 3 to 4 ft. (90 cm to 1.2 m) apart in garden beds

How should I plant Wave Petunias in containers?

For lush, full container displays, place 1 to 3 plants into a 10-in. (25-cm) or larger container, hanging basket or patio planter.

When should I water and fertilize my Wave

      Petunias?

Don't let your Wave Petunias dry out between waterings. They need plenty of water and keep in mind that containers dry out faster than in-ground beds.

Apply a liquid fertilizer every 10 to 14 days or use a combination of liquid and a slow-release fertilizer. Always follow the recommendations shown on the labels!

How heat tolerant are Wave Petunias?

The more established the plant, the more heat tolerant it is. If you can, plant your Wave Petunias as early as possible before the hot weather comes. This way, they'll establish their root systems, which will improve their heat tolerance. Also, avoid "overhead" watering. If possible, water your plants in the morning so the foliage dries before the heat of the day sets in.

What should I do if the leaves start turning yellow?

If this happens to your Wave Petunia plants, a one-time feeding with 20-20-20 fertilizer will help prevent leaf yellowing in late Summer. Or you can add a slow-release fertilizer when you plant them.

Should I use mulch around my Wave Petunias?

There's nothing against using mulch, however, Wave Petunias form their own "weed-choking", solid mat of color that protects the roots and conserves moisture.

My Wave Petunias are dying! What's wrong with

     them?

As mentioned above, we recommend that you rotate our plantings every year – Wave Petunias and the soil perform better when they are switched out each season. That could be one possibility. If you have already done this and your plants are still dying, you may need to add more fertilizer. Wave Petunias grow so fast that they sometimes require more fertilizer than standard petunias, especially during the heat of the Summer and if they are planted in containers.

If possible, mix a tablespoon of slow-release fertilizer with the soil or into the hole when you are planting your Wave Petunias. This will provide constant food as the plant grows. If you are using a standard fertilizer, like Miracle-Gro®, try fertilizing twice as often as usual to promote new growth. However, even after increasing the feed, it may take as long as 10 to 14 days to see significant growth throughout.

Another possibility is that the roots got too hot, too dry or too wet. Wilting is not only a sign of the plant needing water, but can also mean that the roots are dying. The best practice for watering is to test the soil by poking your finger down in the soil at least 2.5 to 3 in. If it's still moist, you do not need to water. During the hottest months of the Summer, you may need to water every day or twice a day for small containers.

If you have done all of this and your plants are still dying, it may be best to bring one of your plants to one of our garden experts to verify if there is a disease issue.

I found bugs eating away at my Wave Petunias! What

    should I do?

We suggest you purchase a garden pesticide that is recommended for petunias or flowers in general. Follow the instructions on the label and it should control the insect problem accordingly.

I have black spots on the leaves of my Wave

     Petunias. What does this mean?

If the "black spots" you see are moving, see the question above.

If not, the black spots are most likely seeds that have come from pods formed after the flowers die. This is a common occurrence and, to make sure the plant continues to bloom, you only need to make sure to fertilize them. This especially happens during the Summer months when the temperatures are high and you have to water more frequently.

My Wave Petunias are starting to seed. Why is this

    happening?

Wave Petunias will start to seed, however, as long as you fertilize them, they will continue to bloom. When planted in the ground, the plants get feed from the soil, so you only have to fertilize every 2 weeks or so. Obviously, containers and hanging baskets require more feeding – sometimes twice a week during the Summer.

If you continue to fertilize your plants, new growth will appear within 2 weeks. If they start looking "stringy," cut them back a few inches as long as you continue to fertilize them twice a week. It will most likely take at least 10 to 14 days to see results.

My Wave Petunias aren't growing with their normal,

     lush habit. Any ideas?

It could be how much you are feeding the plants. Again, Wave Petunias are heavy feeders and like lots of fertilizer to growth lush and strong. When planted in the ground, the plants get feed from the soil, so you only have to fertilize every 2 weeks or so. Obviously, containers and hanging baskets require more feeding – sometimes twice a week during the Summer.

If I bring my Wave Petunias inside for the winter and

put them in a sunny spot, will they survive?

Wave Petunias really perform best when planted outdoors during the Summer months. The conditions indoors, even in a sunny spot, are tough on Wave Petunias, as with many other Summer garden plants. We recommend starting fresh each Spring with new, young plants for the best performing petunias!

Can I re-plant my Wave Petunias? And if so, will they

     grow again next year?

Wave Petunias were really developed to be planted once during the season and then allowed to die after the first frost. In very mild climates like Southern Florida, Texas and coastal Southern California – Wave Petunias will grow through the Winter. The rest of North America gets frost during late Autumn and Wave does not survive the Winter months, especially in containers and baskets. We recommend starting fresh each Spring with new, young plants for the best performing petunias!

Can I save the seeds from my Wave Petunias and

     plant them next year?

Since Wave Petunias are considered "hybrids" – crossing two "parent" plants to get a specific "offspring" – the plants you purchase from the garden center each year are really one-of-a-kinds. Any seed that is taken from Wave Petunias are not the same as a regular Wave plant and will not perform the same way.

And since each Wave series is legally protected and trademarked, collecting and re-planting Wave seeds infringes on the intellectual property. It is best to start fresh each Spring with new, young plants for the best performing petunias!

Why aren't there any yellow Wave Petunias? Can I

expect to see this color in the future?

It is a difficult task to breed yellow petunias and even more of a challenge to make sure the plants have a spreading habit like the rest of the Wave series. They are currently working toward developing a yellow for the Wave Family and I am sure there will be a large announcement when it's ready to be introduced.
