Fertilizer Elements

Pro's and Con's of organic fertilizers | Emerald Lawns

If you’ve ever picked up a bag of fertilizer, you’ve probably noticed three numbers on the label—something like 5-10-5. These numbers are key to choosing the right product for your plants.

What Do the Numbers Mean?

The three numbers represent the percentage of nutrients in the bag:

  • Nitrogen (N) – first number
  • Phosphorus (P) – second number
  • Potassium (K) – third number

So, a 5-10-5 fertilizer contains:

  • 5% nitrogen
  • 10% phosphorus
  • 5% potassium

This combination is often called NPK, and these are the three main nutrients plants need to grow.

What Each Nutrient Does

Each part of NPK plays a different role in plant health:

Nitrogen (N)

  • Promotes leafy growth and rich green color
  • Helps lawns look thick and vibrant
  • Too little can cause yellowing
  • Too much can lead to lots of leaves but fewer flowers or fruits

Phosphorus (P)

  • Supports strong root development
  • Encourages blooms and fruit production
  • A deficiency may result in small plants with few flowers or a purplish tint

Potassium (K)

  • Boosts overall plant health and strength
  • Helps with flowering, fruiting and branching
  • Supports important internal plant functions
  • Too much can interfere with the uptake of other nutrients

What About Other Nutrients?

In addition to NPK, plants also benefit from smaller amounts of other nutrients like:

  • Calcium
  • Iron
  • Manganese
  • Zinc
  • Sulfur

These are usually listed on the side of the bag and help support overall plant health.

Choosing the Right Fertilizer

Different plants have different nutrient needs, so there’s no one-size-fits-all fertilizer. The best way to know what your soil needs is to test it first.

Once you know what nutrients your soil is lacking, you can choose a fertilizer that gives your plants exactly what they need to thrive.

Keep It Simple

Understanding fertilizer labels doesn’t have to be complicated. Once you know what NPK stands for, you can confidently choose the right product to grow healthier lawns, stronger roots and more vibrant blooms.
