Job Summary 

The Garden Center Associate provides sales, customer service, restocking, merchandising and display support within the Garden Center and Design departments at the Lititz retail location. This position is year-round. This role requires a customer-first attitude, willingness to learn, attention to department presentation and basic knowledge of gardening and garden-related products. Responsibilities include assisting customers, processing shipments, maintaining merchandise, supporting inventory counts and helping create a clean, safe and inspiring shopping experience. 

Key Responsibilities 

Customer Experience 

  • Approach every customer with a smile and pleasant attitude, offering assistance as needed and answering questions politely. 
  • Provide customers with a positive, successful shopping experience that encourages them to return. 
  • Assist customers with questions and recommendations related to fertilizers, chemicals, soils, patio furniture, birding items, garden decor, pottery, seeds, bulbs and other garden-related products. 
  • Follow up with customers or seek assistance from others when an answer is not immediately known. 
  • Maintain a presentable appearance and professional attitude while supporting the Esbenshade's customer service standard. 

Department Support and Merchandising 

  • Provide sales and customer service support in the Garden Center and Design departments. 
  • Execute restocking, merchandising and display plans as directed by the Department Manager. 
  • Learn the basics of all items within the assigned departments, including gardening supplies, seeds and bulbs, pottery, containers, garden decor, birding and related hard goods. 
  • Stock, price, clean and organize merchandise in assigned areas as needed. 
  • Support attractive, well-stocked and easy-to-shop department displays that inspire customers. 

Receiving, Inventory and Operations 

  • Receive, check in and process shipments and transfers with speed and accuracy. 
  • Help with inventory counts throughout the seasons. 
  • Oversee quality control and cleanliness of assigned areas. 
  • Maintain a safe working and shopping environment at all times. 
  • Communicate problems or concerns with management and display a positive attitude with employees and customers. 
  • Perform all other duties assigned by a supervisor or management personnel. 

Skills and Qualifications 

  • Ability to provide outstanding customer service in a friendly, helpful and professional manner. 
  • Basic knowledge of gardening and garden-related products is helpful. 
  • Familiarity with fertilizers, chemicals, soils and amendments, seeds and bulbs, pottery and containers, garden decor, birding and related hard goods is helpful. 
  • Speed and accuracy with processing shipments and transfers. 
  • Creativity and merchandising experience is a plus. 
  • Basic computer experience or willingness to learn is preferred. 
  • Willingness to learn department products and support customer recommendations. 

Work Schedule and Physical Requirements 

  • Year-round position with seasonal hours that vary based on business needs. 
  • Approximate schedule: 5-day work week. The store is open Monday through Saturday, and the employee will work five days a week. When the employee is scheduled on Saturday, they will receive a weekday off in addition to Sunday when the store is closed. 
  • Please note: Overtime may be required during the Spring season. However, overtime will be scheduled with a set start time and end time. Overtime usually begins in April and ends in June and can average 45-50 total hours.  
  • Willingness to work an average of two to three evenings per week during the busy spring season if evening hours are agreed upon at hiring. 
  • Most Saturdays are required. 
  • Some holidays and special event periods are required, including Easter weekend, Mother's Day weekend, Memorial Day, Black Friday and the week of the parking lot sale. 
  • Some heavy lifting is required.
