Job Summary 

The Seasonal Nursery Associate is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working outdoors, helping customers and being part of the energy of the holiday season. This role supports the Nursery Department during one of the most festive times of the year, including helping customers select Christmas trees, greens and other seasonal nursery items that make their homes and celebrations special. 

This position is ideal for a friendly, dependable person who enjoys staying active, learning about plants and nursery products and creating a positive shopping experience for customers. Seasonal team members who perform well and demonstrate strong attendance, teamwork and customer service are often considered first for future seasonal or permanent opportunities as business needs allow. 

Key Responsibilities 

Customer Experience 

  • Provide excellent customer service to customers, employees and management. 
  • Approach customers with a helpful attitude, offer assistance as needed, answer questions politely and support a positive shopping experience. 
  • Proactively assist customers with plant material and related nursery products. 
  • Maintain good communication with customers, employees and management. 
  • Remain tolerant, tactful, cheerful, sincere, polite, honest, encouraging and accommodating when working with customers and team members. 
  • Maintain knowledge of Esbenshade's Customer Loyalty Card Program and assist customers as needed. 

Department Support 

  • Support the Nursery Department Manager with daily department operations and assigned tasks. 
  • Keep the nursery area clean, neat, safe and organized, including removing trash and sweeping walkways as needed. 
  • Assist with loading and unloading customer vehicles and delivery trucks. 
  • Stay informed about weekly sales items throughout the nursery department. 
  • Operate the nursery register and assist with customer checkout as needed. 
  • Complete other duties assigned by a supervisor or management personnel. 

Safety and Team Standards 

  • Follow all company safety rules and exercise caution in all activities. 
  • Maintain a safe working and shopping environment for customers and employees. 
  • Work cooperatively with department employees, store leadership and management to support department needs. 

Skills and Qualifications 

  • Ability to provide friendly, patient and helpful customer service. 
  • Interest in learning about trees, shrubs, nursery products and customer project needs. 
  • Basic tree and shrub knowledge is helpful, but not required. 
  • Simple computer experience or willingness to learn. 
  • Willingness to learn to operate a cash register. 
  • Willingness to learn and safely operate small equipment, including a small electric chain saw and tree drill. 
  • Previous retail, customer service, nursery, landscaping, or garden center experience is helpful, but not required. 

Work Schedule and Physical Requirements 

  • Seasonal, full-time position beginning immediately and continuing through Christmas. 
  • Must be available to work evenings and Saturdays as needed. 
  • Schedule may vary based on seasonal business needs, customer traffic and department coverage requirements. 
  • Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds. 
  • Ability to stand and work on your feet for extended periods, up to 6 to 8 hours. 
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including cold, heat, rain, snow and sleet.
