Mandevilla

Mandevillas are beloved for their lush, tropical look and trumpet-shaped blooms. This flowering vine has a naturally climbing and trailing growth habit, making it an excellent choice for containers, hanging baskets, trellises and garden supports.
With the right conditions, mandevillas are surprisingly easy to grow and will reward you with flowers from late spring all the way until frost.
Light & Temperature Requirements
Mandevillas thrive in bright sunlight and warm temperatures. For best flowering, place them in a spot that receives full sun for most of the day. Warmth is essential! These plants are not cold tolerant and prefer temperatures above 45°F.
As a tropical plant, mandevilla will suffer damage from cold exposure, so protection is crucial once temperatures begin to drop.
Growth Habit & Pruning
Mandevillas naturally climb and trail, making them perfect for training on trellises, arbors, or other supports. As days shorten in the fall, you may notice the plant sending out long shoots. These can be lightly trimmed in autumn to keep the plant tidy.
Avoid heavy pruning in the spring. The shoots that grow during spring and summer are responsible for producing flower buds for the season, so cutting back too hard can reduce blooming.
Soil Needs
Use a well-draining potting soil to prevent soggy roots. Good drainage is especially important for container-grown mandevillas, as excess moisture can lead to stress or disease.
Pests to Watch For
The most common pests affecting mandevilla are:
- Red spider mites
- Mealybugs
If pests appear, treat promptly with Bonide Insecticidal Soap or Organocide Organic Insecticide to keep infestations under control.
Overwintering Mandevillas
Mandevillas can be overwintered indoors if protected from the cold. During winter:
- Keep the plant in a bright location
- Reduce watering and allow the soil to stay on the dry side
- Expect some leaf drop and little to no flowering. This is normal
Once spring arrives, gradually increase watering to encourage new growth. With warmer temperatures and longer days, your mandevilla will bounce back and prepare for another season of blooms.
With their bold flowers, fast growth and tropical charm, mandevillas are a stunning addition to any garden or patio. Give them warmth, sunshine and proper care and they’ll put on a vibrant display season after season.
