Nepeta (Cat Mint)

Cat's Meow' - Catmint - Nepeta faassenii | Proven Winners

If you’re looking for a low-maintenance perennial that delivers months of color, catmint (Nepeta) is hard to beat.

Often confused with its cousin catnip, catmint is far more refined in the garden. It has gray-green foliage and spikes of lavender-blue (and sometimes pink or white) flowers that bloom from late spring into early fall. Its gentle, mounding habit adds a cottage-garden feel wherever it’s planted.

Why Grow Catmint?

Catmint is a favorite for both beginners and seasoned gardeners thanks to its easygoing nature. It thrives in full sun to light shade, tolerates heat and drought and grows well in a wide range of soils as long as drainage is good.

Once established, it requires very little watering and rarely needs fertilizer. Even better, its aromatic foliage helps deter deer and rabbits while attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies.

Planting & Care

Plant catmint in spring or early fall, spacing plants about 18–24 inches apart to allow for spreading. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, plant at the same depth as the container, and water thoroughly.

During the first growing season, water regularly to establish roots. After that, catmint is quite drought tolerant. To keep plants looking their best, shear them back after the first flush of blooms. This encourages fresh foliage and a second round of flowers to grow. Dividing plants every few years will also help maintain vigor.

Garden Uses

Thanks to its versatility, catmint works almost anywhere! It pairs beautifully with plants like roses, salvia and ornamental grasses, and can even be used as a cold-hardy alternative to lavender.
