One of the more visible symbols of Ohio State athletics is
Brutus Buckeye, the school's mascot. Brutus first appeared in 1965. Ohio is
commonly referred to as the Buckeye State because of the prevalence of Ohio
Buckeye trees within the state's borders. In 1953, the Ohio legislature
designated the Ohio Buckeye as Ohio's official state tree. A buckeye is a
small, shiny, dark brown nut with a light tan patch that come from the Buckeye
tree. Subsequently Ohio State University adopted Brutus Buckeye as its mascot.
