Spring Lawn Care Tips

Spring time is almost here, and now is the perfect time to begin prepping for a lush, weed-free lawn to enjoy throughout the year! Before applying any products, you’ll want to first give your lawn a thorough inspection and clean up; picking up the debris left by winter. Begin by raking up dead leaves, twigs, branches and grass. Then, if necessary, thatch and aerate your lawn.

Once all debris has been cleared, it’s time to apply weed-preventative products and fertilizer treatments. We recommend Jonathan Green Veri-Green Lawn Food + Crab Grass Preventer. This can be applied anytime in the month of March through May, depending on the weather. Crabgrass preventer keeps crabgrass seeds from germinating and also contains a slow release lawn fertilizer.

If necessary, you’ll also want to seed your lawn as well. A common question asked this time of year is, “Can I start my seeding at the same time I put down crabgrass preventer and fertilizer?” The answer is, Yes! If you need to seed, you have several choices. First, use Scott's Step 1: For Seeding, which can differentiate true grass from crabgrass. Put it down while you are seeding and it will prevent crabgrass from germinating, and at the same time will not harm your grass seed.

Another option is to apply the Jonathan Green Veri-Green Lawn Food + Crab Grass Preventer and wait to do your seeding in the fall. The choice can be made based upon the condition of your lawn. If you have a very small spot you want to seed, apply a starter fertilizer for your grass seed and be on the lookout for crabgrass in that area.

Once your seed has been put down, new grass will emerge between seven and 21 days, depending on the grass variety and growing temperatures. Grass seed can be planted early, before growing temperatures are optimal. Watering is very important after seeding. Make sure the soil stays consistently moist. Your lawn will probably require less watering this time of year, due to the spring rains and cooler temperatures. When things warm up, you will need to water more frequently.

Now sit back and watch your beautiful lawn take root, green up, and flourish!
