    Aspects Hummzinger Excel

Posted by Mary C on Jul 24th 2024

I've had one of these for over 10 years, and just replaced it. Until I found out about the nectar guards, I would have given this another 5 star rating. But I also bought an Ultra, which came with the nectar guards, and the guards do help at keeping spiders from crawling in and drowning in the nectar. It's a small thing, but it is a nice change to the design. (Note: the nectar guards will not fit this feeder.) Pros about the Excel: large nectar capacity, which is a good thing in S. CA where we get a lot of birds; incredibly easy to clean; very durable --I don't think I needed to replace my 10-year-old version, but I decided to; I can get multiple birds at the feeding ports, especially when they are migrating through. Cons: these are initially pricey, but considering how long they last, it is hard to argue against the value. The feeder would be slightly better if the nectar guards fit, but I can understand why the company has not changed the design. It's a very good design.

ASPECTS HUMMZINGER EXCEL CAPACITY HUMMINGBIRD FEEDER (16 OZ)

Posted by Suzanne Thierry on Aug 29th 2023

This seems to be the best one I've had yet. I love how I often see two hummers feeding at once and much easier to clean than a tube style feeder.

Great little hummingbird feeder- yellow jackets leave it alone!

Posted by A. Near on Aug 23rd 2022

I have always had the tall 'jar' type hummingbird feeders with the red bottom/yellow plastic flowers - but this year the feeders were getting swarmed by bees and yellow jackets who can all reach the sugar water through the little holes at the bottom. The yellow jackets were driving away my little hummers so, at a friend's recmmendation, I tried one of these round feeders because the fluid level is much further away from the drinking holes. The hummingbirds can reach it easily but the yellow-jackets and bees can't , so they lose interest. They're really leaving this one alone.. and my hummingbirds seem love it.

Bought one with a plastic rather than a metal hanger. It didn't last and broke.

No Wasp, Hornets, Bees or ants!

Posted by Heidi Burleigh on Jul 10th 2022

I have resisted having a hummingbird feeder due to the fact that they always attracted wasps and ants. This feeder is just perfect, I have had it for about a month and not one wasp has approached it and the moat in the middle make it impossible for ants to get in there. My hummingbirds love it!

These last for years, and on direct sun

Posted by Lisa in W.C. on May 13th 2022

I live in California, I have had three of these in full-sun year-round for over 20 years. They are expensive but I wouldn't buy a cheap imitation. I have some hanging by the hook and for others I bought copper pipe and removed the hook, the copper pipe fits perfectly in the hole underneath for locating in areas where the feeder can't be hung.

Give the Hummingbirds What They Like

Posted by A Discerning Observer on Mar 26th 2022

The Aspects Excel earns my full endorsement. I'll inject some birder guidance into this review. I purchased mine after success with an Aspects Mini eight years running. The products have lifetime guarantees that Aspects honors part by part. While the feeder glistens in the sun, the Excel trades ostentatious aesthetics for function. In California, the feeder will be adorned with Allen's and Anna's hummingbirds, sometimes all six ports taken. The perimeter perch is the right distance for the tiniest of birds to poke their bills into the ports. As the instructions suggest, boil 3.5 oz. of raw organic granulated Central American sugar in a covered pot of 14 oz. of water until every particle has dissolved. Typically, 6 minutes or less on the burner. Make sure the homemade nectar has cooled before pouring it into the feeder base. Clean both parts twice a week with dish soap. Never skip a cleaning because floating germs and wasp proboscis contamination will sicken an unsuspecting bird. Those speedy wing strokes don't have the power to carry a disease along with the Jefferson nickel bodyweight. If the sponge can't access a spot of bacteria, submerge the feeder in water and bleach for 15 minutes. Use a straw brush to wipe inside the holes. About that moat… Its water is an effective deterrent to deter ants, all right. We have a Droll Yankees seed feeder dangling two feet away, so the house finches and mourning doves drink the moat water to wash down the thistle and millet. ($10K Tip: Never feed them unshelled sunflower seeds unless you want squirrels squeezing into the feeder.) The Aspects Excel works 365/24/7 because, contrary to human logic, sugar water will not overpower the migration instinct in cold climates. The lone bird that stays will defend its territory fall and winter. Feed him! Spring through summer, an onslaught of hungry hummers will be too much for one shimmering king. He'll allow five other calorie-consuming birds to drink from the free ports while he partakes from the sixth port of his choice. The Aspects Excel is sturdy, simple and a favor to the world. With the shortage of bees to pollinate them, plants depend increasingly more on hummingbirds to pick up the slack.
